So we have started our viral video project and I am currently working with Adam Wright, Pete something or other and Mike Dovey. We have started with the idea of representing image into sound, we came up with this idea from the episode of “spaced” with the Tyresse rave
From this we began to brainstorm our own ideas and contemplated different sounds to go into the scenes. From this we decided to tackle the sound elements as a team, we each chose everyday sounds and complied them together to see if they would form a assessable beat, I chose the sounds of a clock, lighter, beer can opening and a basic back beat to accompany it. Overall we have gone with Pete’s sound composition due to the aspect that we as a team believe his to be the most assessable to a shot to shot format.
We have now taken it upon our selfs to work on separate parts of the project, at the moment I am working on the website and general interactivity towards the site, Adam is working on the storyboard, Pete is working on the synopsis and narrative and Dovey is working on the music (surprise surprise). I do believe at the moment the project is going well for us although I am worried that it may just sound good in our heads and when it comes filming it may look shit, but I guess we will have to see.
Since then we have now finished our project, all except for me to write out this blog. As they say “it all turned out alright in the end”, but then I never really was to worried, alright I was a bit unsure about how the group would cope as a team but thats only because I wasn’t certain how certain individuals would work in a team but to say the least we all done the work. So as you know I was in charge of the website which in my opinion turned out great (I guess I would say that wouldn’t I) I’m suggesting it turned out great, for more than one reason really; firstly I would suggest that in accordance with the criteria I kept the imagery very close to what we were trying to do, I also wanted to keep the essence of the team in it, thus the reason as to why the images developed from me,Dovey, Pete and Adam, as they progressed however the images went away from the team to suggest color and the meaning that color has within sound.
The final bunch of images I ended up using in the website were overly simplistic, colorful and easy to interact with. I decided to use simple images to connect the aspect of music, the way music connects to us is overly simple,(we hear it) so why not suggest this in the site. I also chose to use simple colors to try to represent the structure of music and its texture. One of the criticisms Ive had is that the website is very different to the video, to which I agree, however though I do believe that I was the only one in the group really trying to suggest sound into image, which was our main goal from the start.
The making of the video was good fun. we spend about a day filming and then another day editing, it seemed that we spend forever coming up with the idea but hardly any time at all filming it. If I personally was to change anything I would of worked on the sound of the lighter, we were trying to sync the sound of the lighter to the image of the lighter. Most of the image seem correct and well placed to the sound of the beat except the lighter so thats my only moan really. I really enjoyed working on this project and I really enjoyed helping (even if ever so slightly on the editing) on the video. I would say however that I am really pleased with the way the website came out, I appreciate I keep saying this but I really feel this is the best site I have made to date.
Researching for this project was a bit difficult, we were representing image into sound and apart for some experimental sound artists (Phillip Glass etc) it was hard to find inspiration as well as research material. For myself I found inspiration in the sounds themselves, it was trying to represent the sounds into image, this made me inspired from the very beginning until the end. I think thats why I enjoyed making the website because I felt very free in terms of creativity. No one knows what sound looks like so its very open to self interpretation. My final thoughts on this project are that the idea itself is better than the final video due to not fully understanding the teams individual creative needs. I for instance was under the impression that we were going for something sleek and stylish thus making the website look so, the actual reality was that Pete was making a more tongue in cheek urbanish video about sound, the end result obviously is that the video and website don’t really work together.
All in all I enjoyed the project and I would very happily work with Pete, Mike and Adam again.
